Camp Run: Train, Race, Serve

The Camp Run Series is composed of several running events happening throughout the year at Camp Aguinaldo, Quezon City. The series will feature a military or boot camp theme, a unique race format, and a novel route for the runners. It will also be tailored to encourage continuous participation rather than competitiveness, and will ultimately be developed to become a nationwide program or template.

The races will have 5 kilometers and 10 kilometers distances. Participants can expect race grounds that are not only secure, but smog and smoke-free as the events will be held inside Camp Aguinaldo which has less traffic movement than the regular thoroughfares and roads of usual running routes. Aside from needed facilities such as ample water stations and accurate kilometer and directional markings, the Camp Run events will also provide free training clinics and a designated family and finishers' activity area.

             The routes inside Camp Aguinaldo

In order to encourage participants to attend all events of the Camp Run Series, eXtribe also created the "VeteRan" system. Runners can also use the series as preparatory training for the Subic International Marathon, which will be held early 2012.

There's a New Runner Surfing In The Clouds

It's Green, it's black, it's on the clouds -- and it's the ON CloudSurfer.

Friday, July 22 2011, I have been one of the privileged to see it first-hand (or foot) and try it ON to feel the cloud-like effect when it's ON our feet. I treaded the shoe at the middle-isle of Chris Sports' store in Megamall like it was just a lane of race track in Ultra. And being so used to race flats and barefoot shoes, the CloudSurfer feels so different for my feet, every step makes me feel like I'm floating as the shoe gives me a bounce-back-like propulsion effect from it's CloudTec™ technology system.

What makes this possible is the 13 highly functional cushioning element: A piece of circular rubber, which absorbs both the vertical and the horizontal impact. As the foot hits the ground with forward momentum, the CloudTec™ element folds back, effectively allowing the foot to glide to a softer halt. After landing, the element is compressed by the weight of the runner, locks together and is fully firm for the push-off.

It's time to Put It On
I raced with it just a while ago at the 2011 RunFest for 16K distance, and another 3K at the 2011 Rexona run (gotta hit two races in one go). I wasn't able to get a good warm-up before the race, but my muscles did not tighten even though I made a wrong immediate tempo-pace at the beginning of the race. Oh and yeah, I wasn't even able to break-it in aside from the almost 6 hours of roaming last Saturday at the Mall of Asia.

More of my personal review about this shoe soon, so keep posted.

The line of shoe products of ON (CloudRunner and CloudSurfer) will be out in the Philippine market at Chris Sports on the 1st week of September, 2011. Watch out for it!

The Day When I Tapped-Out From the Saints

I could still remember some of those magnificent moments last year whenever I triumph over the saints, each time the saints praised me (I think), and even one-time when I almost looked-down on those saints, bearing in my mind that "it's just a saint (street), but I'm a runner". Gaining victory at the peak of those saints has always been challenging but fulfilling to me as well. It was during those striding moments against the saints that I get to reminisce and relive my College running and training days in Baguio.

I'm talking about the famous hills-training ground of aNR Ortigas-Pearl -- the St. Paul and St. Martin streets in Pasig. And yes, I also trained from those roads together with the other members of aNR Ortigas 1st season lead by Luis Arcangel (hey, long time no see) and Drew Llanes.

With Team Life before the race
Last Sunday, July 17 2011, Pocari Sweat, organized by PepSquad Events, gave their participants a new and exciting route beginning at the Frontera Verde in Tiendesitas, Ortigas. Thereon, the runners had a one of their joyous and challenging 10K route being able to take-on a down-up-down-up race through the hills of St. Martin, St. Paul, and Julia Vargas in Pasig. It was the highlight of the 10K race course after-all that even Ms. Tia of PepSquad wanted to join the race if not for her duty to make this race successful for the runners.

My lack of regular training (is that an excuse?) has kept me this time from conquering these steep inclines of our training ground. Although, as with my previous races, it helps having to make some runner among the participants as your target goal. And this time, it was Reylynne (a TBR batchmate) whom I targeted to chase for. Our gap however did not even close to a meter throughout the route, and if I could accurately estimate, I only got to chase her while going down from St. Martin at a gap of only 3-4 meters. The going-up part has become so challenging to me that I tapped-out in the middle, choosing to walk twice during the ascent on these two hill-climbing roads. Although I gave these roads the honor for busting our lungs during those aNR sessions, this time I did not gave the glory back to these saints 'coz each time I reach their peak, it made me decide that I would still be coming back and re-train... hopefully soon!

Towards the Finish Line. Thanks to Greentennial Photos
The race turned out successful, with the presence of Jasmine Curtis - Pocari Sweat's product model and endorser, the runners had their wonderful smiles and photo-op with her (and so do I). ;)

The Marshals all over the route have managed very well the traffic of vehicles and runners. Hydration was of course, not just ample but more than enough of Pocari and water. Finisher's shirt was also given to all, and some more Pocari Sweat.

Gearing Up and Some Running Tips

Running races aren’t always about your speed or passing through the finish line, it goes beyond your physical abilities. Races are a great way to motivate yourself to get fit and can also be a platform for personal breakthroughs. Running makes you test your limits, but also makes you able to believe in yourself by taking control.

The race is not the only thing that is important. The preparation and training involved leading up to the race can prove even more exhilarating than the race itself. Many may not know how important it is to be ready on race day. With only a few months to go until the King of the Road race on October 23, most runners participating in the race are getting physically prepared to run the 5k, 16.8k and 21k course. You have to put a lot of thought into a lot of things – whether it’d be getting the proper running gear, eating a nourishing diet, and do so much more. Surely, nobody wants to cross the finish line exhausted and in pain.

Here are a few tips that can get you closer to being crowned as this year’s King of the Road.

Do your homework. A lot, or even just a teeny-tiny amount of research can help. Look at the route of the map and get a feel of what you will be getting yourself into. You can also look at the terrain to see the downhills, uphills, ridges, etc that can make an impact on your running performance. At least when you have an idea of where these spots are, you’ll be able to have a good indication of where the course gets tough.

Get the perfect shoe. There are all types of great running gear to get you through training. The first thing you’ll need is a new pair of running shoes. Without a good pair, you can expect lots of pains in your legs and lower back. When buying the right shoe, keep ventilation, cushioning and comfort in mind. Ask help from the sales associate about various choices today.

Carbs, carbs, and more carbs. Carbohydrates are the most common source of energy, so when preparing for a run, you really have to load up on the carbs. If you’re one of those people on a low-carb diet, you better stop now. The best sources of carbohydrates are fruits, sweets, soft drinks, bread, pasta, potatoes, rice, and cereals.

Never underestimate stretching. Most of the time, beginning runners finish a run and find themselves tight and sore, sometimes even resulting to a running injury. A 15-minute stretch after every run makes all the difference. The soreness is lessened, muscle flexibility is increased, strides are longer, and long term injury is prevented.

Listen to your body. A common error many runners make is underestimating the effort involved when training. When unprepared, you risk exposing your body to some serious running injuries. It is essential to listen to your body, slowly upping the mileage and adopting a method in which you alternate tough, thorough workout with rest or some soft, easy workouts, giving your body a lot of time to recover.

Remember, even after reading all these tips, you still have to prepare yourself mentally in finishing a personal breakthrough such as this.

Held in five countries across the region, the adidas KOTR will culminate in an ultimate championship race in its first ever host country, the Philippines, making it the ultimate race destination in Asia on October 23, at the Bonifacio Global City.

Check out this link and the Adidas KOTR 2011 FAQ for more details about this upcoming event. Other training tips from Adidas itself may also be found here.
