5 Tips on How to Jog Safely on the Roads

by: Jeric Danao

In the Philippines, Toyota Altis, Honda Civics, or cars in general are just all over the place. People who turn to jogging as their daily form of exercise sometimes end up being scared because of the risks they may encounter on the roads. Surely, you would want safety precautions in place when you are taking a jog, right? Having that in mind, these tips will surely help you jog safely.

1. Be Visible

Do not assume that the drivers on the road can see you; in fact, it would be better for all parties if you pretend that they think you are invisible. Try wearing bright colors for your jogging outfit so that you will appear and remain visible to them.

Furthermore, remember to wear reflective clothing like a lightweight vest or take a headlamp or a handheld light to catch the eyes of all the cars in the area where you are jogging at. Take note that the light you should bring is supposed to be an LED that is bright enough.

2. Face Traffic

Going along the flow of traffic is not the right decision when you are jogging on a busy street. Keep in mind that going the other way and facing the traffic is the far safer option for joggers everywhere. It is so much easier for you to be able to see and react to incoming cars that may potentially bring you harm.

Apply this same method when you are walking on the roads. It is like what they say, “better safe, than sorry.”

3. Be Wary of Your Surroundings

Although it is cool to listen to your own soundtrack while you are jogging, it is actually better if you do not listen to one. It is important to be conscious of your surroundings and wearing earphones will not help you notice incoming hazards.

If you must listen to music, be sure to keep the volume low enough for you to hear your environment. You could also wear just one earphone instead of both of them.

4. Watch Out for Drivers at Dawn and Dusk

Dawn and dusk (and evenings) are the hardest time for drivers to be concentrating, especially because of the lack of sunlight. If they cannot see you while the sun is out, then they will definitely not see you at these times of the day. Be sure to wear reflective piece of clothing so you will appear more visible to the cars on the road.

Be also wary about how drivers could be overly tired, which result to inattentiveness, at these times so be extra careful where you jog.

5. Follow the Rules

Now, you have to admit that the cars, and their drivers, are not always to blame when it comes to some road accidents. At times, it will be the pedestrian’s fault which is why it is important for everyone, including joggers, to always follow the rules.

Follow the traffic light at all times, even when you believe there is no car in sight. Also, remember to be courteous while you are on your run. You are not the only one who uses the road, after all.

Always keep these tips in your mind and remember to have fun and be safe while on a jog!
