Clean Your Car Emissions, Keep Earth Breathable

by: Jeric Danao

A lot of us, although we love running or cycling, also own some kind of fuel-operated vehicles. And we all know that these vehicles emits carbon that contributes to smoke pollution in our environment. Who among you can relate when while you're running on the road side and puffing for oxygen a vehicle passes by with carbon black smoke emission? So infuriating, right? If only you could knock out cold the driver or the owner! While not all of us have absolute control over these pollutions, we do however, have choices to lessen our own vehicle's bad emissions without emptying out our pockets in investing (yet) on the future of emission-less vehicles.

It is your responsibility not just to the country but the world to do your part in making sure that the environment is taken cared of. Especially if you are a vehicle owner you should be aware of what comes out of your muffler. Universal rule to this is to be aware of your vehicles indicators because they will tell you when you’re not taking care of your car anymore. There are numerous ways to make sure you don’t have to worry whether you’re contributing to air pollution or not.

Here are some tips to assure a clean gas emission of your vehicle.

Don’t Be Cheap on the Gasoline

Gasoline prices have been a pain to deal with for a long time but that doesn’t mean you should automatically look to go for the cheapest type of gasoline. The better the quality of gasoline you use the higher-octane level it would usually help your car be more fuel efficient. It leaves less residue and some brands even have cleaning agents in its formula. The engine runs more efficiently because the higher-octane level has better combustion in the engine. Cheaper alternatives may leave dirt and residue that build up and affect your emissions.

Maintain a Clean Air Filter

Do not wait for smog emissions before cleaning your air filters, make sure to have a regularly scheduled check and change of your air filter. You can base it on the distance you have covered or more on the amount of time you have been driving. Just make sure to keep it consistent so that there will be no buildup of dirt and other contaminant in your engine.

Fuel Additives

There are a variety of brands of fuel cleaners that you could choose from, its main purpose is to keep your engine clean. These additives will help clear the engine’s intake valve and exhaust system of any carbon buildup or deposits. This will help clear out your emissions and keep your car from coughing out smog. Remember that this is poured directly to your fuel tank and that you should give it time to be processed in the car’s systems before it works.

Tire Pressure

Running a fuel-efficient car is essential in lowering the emissions of your car. One key to this is having properly inflated tires. By keeping our tires properly inflated you will not only have a smoother ride but also make sure your engine is working at its peak. Under inflated tires will cause the engine to work harder and when it works harder it will create more buildup and emissions.

Keep your Engine Oil Fresh

Make sure to check your engine oil so that it doesn’t get too dirty. Unchanged engine oil will promote the buildup of gunk and carbon in your engine. Keeping track of the distance you travelled or how much you use your car, like your air filters make sure to change it consistently to make sure that there are no buildups that will lead to emissions.

Aside from checking these specific aspects of your car it is also good to bring your car to a professional mechanic to get a full diagnostic check. Have tune-ups for your car on a consistent basis and don’t wait for your car to be coughing up smoke before you check your car in.

The Future of Space Travel for Filipinos

by: Jeric Danao

Exploration of the solar system for the Philippines is not as farfetched as many might think. There have been steps made that lead to the reality of a space program in the Philippines. Imagine the doors this would open not just in terms of discovery. The future with a space programs brings to mind so many possibilities in terms of foreign investments. There are also possibilities of international partnerships and relationships that can be built. Most importantly it raises the overall morale of the country and its people, it is a statement that can change the perspective of everyone about the country and its people.

Steps Have Already Been Made

The Filipino people have already made steps that signify that having a space program in the Philippines is within the realm of possibilities. Beginning with the case of Chino Roque, who was set to be 1-of-23 other civilians who were screened and chosen to be astronauts. He would be the first Filipino astronaut and it may not be by profession but it does open the minds of younger generations that it is a realistic dream. It also raises hope and optimism in the Filipino people that they may be more qualified than they think to be astronauts.

The Philippines Has Already Launched a Satellite

In March 23, 2016, Diwata-1 was launched into orbit and this is the first micro-satellite launched that is owned by the Philippines. This micro-sat was developed by the combined efforts of the Department of Science and Technology, the University of the Philippines, Tohoku University, and Hokkaido University. This project was mainly headed by Filipino engineers and scientists with the supervision of experts from Japan. The satellite is meant to take and transmit images that reflect climate change and the Philippines’ natural resources and sites. This will help in early recognition of storms and typhoons, which are known to be devastating to the Philippines. The government will also be able to keep an eye on natural resources and agricultural projects, whether there is significant growth and the real-time effects to these natural sites. This will help in planning and reaction to calamities and issues earlier.

This is more than a project though, it is a statement that the Filipino people is ready for the next big step. That Filipino scientists and engineers are more than capable to handle new projects and are just waiting for the support of the Philippine government to back up through capital and budgets. The competency is definitely there, all they need now is the resources to create a consistent program.

Moving Forward

Government officials have already taken notice to the importance of a space program to a country, not just in terms of exploration but on a country’s, economic growth, security and overall responses to disasters. Looking forward a space program based on the Philippines and is solely focused on the development of the local space program will improve the standing of the country in comparison to other developing nations. Communications and surveillance are two operations that could greatly improve the country’s recognition, defense and reaction to different situations. This will also open different avenues of relationship opportunities with other nations. Future partnerships, projects and programs can be implemented for a better global space community that focuses on the exploration and dissemination of this information for better decision making.

Space travel may be a way off right now, but the Filipino people are not behind. There has been significant developments going towards that direction though that means that space travel may be far but it is in sight. There are a few more steps to be made and support gathered to make sure the programs stays to course but when the time comes don’t be surprised to see the Philippines as a player for space exploration and travel.
