McHappy Day Stripes Run

More than believing kids can stay active and have fun at the same time, McDonald’s also encourages parents to be their kids’ own play mates. With that, McDonald’s is once again inviting families to put on their running shoes and enjoy a one of a kind play date with the entire family at the 2014 McHappy Day Stripes Run.

This year’s stripes theme and race categories, named after the lovable McDonaldland characters, are sure to be a hit among kids, families and even seasoned runners.

Special addition to this year’s race kits are McHappy Day Money to enjoy in the different Family Fair activities, and a pair of Ronald McDonald striped socks. Runners are encouraged to wear the socks on December 6 in support of this year’s beneficiary, the Ronald McDonald Bahay Bulilit, a flagship program of Ronald McDonald House Charities Philippines (RMHC), which builds day care centers for kids in low-income areas.

Go out and play with the family at the 2014 McHappy Day Stripes Run! See event details below:

Run United Enervon HP Recovery Run

Unilab launched last night (November 13) their newest and last running event for the year. As titled, this running event is not going to be a race -- no winners will be declared and instead, pacers from the ULAH Elite Team will be clearly marked to lead the runners with non-competitive target finish times, exclusive only to 5,000 2014 Run United series finishers.

5K Runners will be paced between 40-minutes to 50-minutes finish time; 10K Runners will be paced between 1-hr and 20-minutes up to 1-hr and 50-minutes finish time. The 21K Runners on the other hand will be given cut-off finish time of up to 4-hours but they are highly advised to run it as just an easy LSD (long-steady-distance) run to cap off a full season of long distance running for the year.

Runners who will go ahead from their pacers will be declared DNF (kidding).

This unique event is so designed to help progressive runners (remember Citius, Altius, Fortius from 2014 RU1 to RUPM?) embrace the value of recovery and how its proper application can help them establish future personal records.

All finishers will learn more about the proper application of various recovery regimens at the Enervon HP Recovery Village. Each activity has been developed in partnership with the University of Santo Tomas, College of Rehabilitation Sciences, Sports Science and Physical Therapy Departments.

The village will be divided into key zones: Physical recovery; Sports nutrition recovery; and Mental recovery. Some of the activities will feature hot and cold treatment, flexibility exercises, self myofascial release, and periodization counseling.

Making Love Before an Athletic Competition is A-Okay

by: Dr. Gabe Mirkin, M.D.

Image from Bjorka Oddities
Muhammad Ali would not make love for six weeks before a fight and some football players won't make love on the night before a game. Coach Glenn Hoddle told his players to avoid sexual relations during the month-long 1998 soccer World Cup, However, an article in the Journal of Sports Medicine and Physical Fitness (Sep 1995;35(3):214-217) showed that sexual relations on the night before competition have no effect on endurance to exhaustion on a treadmill, strength, the ability of the body to transport oxygen to muscles, or the amount of blood pumped by the heart.

Lovemaking is not a very demanding exercise. The most aggressive people burn about 250 calories an hour or 4 calories per minute while making love, and the average person makes love for about five minutes and burns about 25 calories. That’s less energy than it takes to walk up two flights of stairs. If you think that you shouldn't make love on the night before a game, you shouldn't participate in pre-game warmups; they are much more demanding than [love making].

Not Making Love Can Hamper Athletic Performance

On the day before competition, most athletes usually reduce their workouts and have extra energy. If they don't make love, they spend the night tossing and turning and wake up exhausted. Casey Stengel, the former manager of the New York Yankees, said “it’s not sex that wrecks these guys, it's staying up all night looking for it.”

The Buffalo Bills football players were rumored to have been separated from their wives before four straight Super Bowl games (1991-1994). You know their record: zero and four. The Minnesota Vikings also lost four Super Bowl Games (1970, 1974, 1975 and 1977). The directors of the 2012 Olympics in London knew better. They handed out 150,000 condoms to the 10,500 competing athletes.

The Scientific Data

Making love has been shown in scientific studies to have no effect on power or endurance (Clinical Journal of Sport Medicine, October 2000;10(4):233-315). Sexual relations do not weaken muscles (J Sex Res 1968; 4:247–248), and do not decrease endurance by reducing maximal aerobic power or oxygen uptake (J Sports Med Phys Fitness 1995;35:214–217).

However, it is possible that the emotional effects of making love may calm the athlete so much that he could lose some of the aggressiveness necessary for successful athletic competition. Nobody has measured the psychological effects that making love could have on athletic performance. We do know that making love can raise blood testosterone levels, and testosterone increases aggression to make an athlete more competitive.

Should You Make Love Before Competition?

It depends on what you believe. If you think that lovemaking will harm an important [game or match], don’t do it. On the other hand, if you believe that lovemaking has no effect on athletic performance, go for it. At least your partner won’t be disappointed with you.

Cool Meets Comfort with Nike’s New Breathe Collection

It may be cool in the Northern Hemisphere for the Holiday 2014 season, but it’s summertime in the Southern half of the world. With the new Breathe Collection, Nike brings summer-focused performance benefits to sport classics. To combat the heat, the collection features breathable, lightweight sneakers that are comfortable enough to keep up with any warm-weather activities. In other words: sneakers for the spirit of summer.

In South America, Brazil’s hot and humid conditions inspired Nike design with the on-the-go lifestyle that switches from the beach one minute, to running and training the next.

The Nike Design team integrated lightweight and breathable materials into the footwear collection to help free feet from oppressive summer temperatures.

The Nike Breathe Collection deconstructs two of Nike’s iconic silhouettes, transforming classic Nike Air Max and Nike Roshe Run sneakers into ultra-breathable, lightweight shoes. The shoes have been stripped to their core essentials — layers of reinforcement removed and heavy materials eliminated. Spacer mesh creates pockets of air between the upper materials to allow for increased airflow.

The Nike Breathe Collection's Air Max Lunar1 styles are infused with Nike Lunarlon foam technology, which refines cushioning by taking comfort and support with a responsive foam ride.

Air Max Lunar 1

Nike Air Max Lunar1 is the definitive union of lightweight cushioning and flexibility. This season, the beveled ribs of Lunarlon foam are highlighted by a colored window that complements the mesh upper.

Air Max 1

Stripped of its traditional leather, suede and synthetic overlays, the Nike Air Max 1 Breathe sheds weight and improves breathability. A dynamic fit tongue ensures the foot stays secure and moves with the body, while an updated Phylon tooling makes the sole ultra-light and super comfortable.

Bold piping offsets the gray mesh to give this season's Air Max Breathe an updated look.

Roshe Run

The definition of cool style, bright colors dominate this season's Nike Roshe Run. The men's colorways boast vividly hued outsoles, bringing a strong contrast to the neutral uppers. The women's looks take the opposite approach, with white outsoles supporting vibrant uppers and accented with a white Swoosh logo.

Distinct colorways for men and women offer vibrant summery hues. The Nike Breathe Collection is now available on nike.com and at select Nike retailers.
