PhilHealth Run Manila Leg Race Registration Update

A 5-day special in-store registration for the Manila leg of PhilHealth Run in partnership with Toby’s and Runnr will kickstart on January 30 and will last until February 3. Select Toby’s (SM Manila, SM Fairview, EDSA Shangri-La) and Runnr outlets (Alabang Town Center, BHS, Trinoma) will accept all runners who wish to participate in the Manila leg of the inaugural PhilHealth Nationwide Run.

Meanwhile, as an update to the initially publicized race information, Runnr ATC takes the place of Toby’s SM Southmall due to logistical limitations. All race registrants may claim their complete race packets at the Sports Loop, 3rd level of Robinson’s Galleria from February 2 to 11. Race participants can likewise register and claim their race kits in a one-stop race registration facility at the Sports Loop throughout the same period.

PhilHealth Run Manila offers runners of varying capabilities four distance categories to choose from – 18K, 10K, 5K, and 3K. Corresponding race registration fees are Php 750.00, Php 650.00, Php 550.00, and Php 350.00. Roughly Php 6-million or 85% of the proceeds of the race registration fees will be given to the Manila leg’s local beneficiaries – Philippine Children’s Medical Center and Cottolengo Filipino orphanage.

Treading Forward

The previous year of racing and running brought a lot of fun, opportunities, new experiences, both bad and good news, and some... running heartbreaks. It is a runner's heartbreak (for me) when you weren't able to obtain what you initially thought was attainable (more on this on my next post)! The final month of the year 2012 was the most down time for me in terms of running and fitness where the lazy-bug took hold of my passion and got the motivation out of me.

But then, life moves on, and so must we!

Breaking Personal Bests

Just a few weeks ago, I realized that the year 2012 wasn't really bad after all. But a fruitful one indeed, much more than I have expected and wished for. It was my season of breaking my own personal bests or personal records (PR), although not that great, but hey, it was still my record!

Aside from obtaining my longest trail run (and a Skyrun at that), I have surpassed my previous sub-50 10K after more than two years during the Run for Light; unexpectedly hit a sub-1:55 21K at the 36th Milo Marathon (Manila elim.); and also finally surpassed my previous two Marathons, finally obtaining a sub-5-hrs at the Run United Philippine Marathon.

The Immuvit Fearless series also gave me some thoughtful realization that real fitness doesn't just concentrate in one muscle group, one discipline, but to our body's overall capacity internally and externally.

2013 Target Races

"By their mid-30s, most athletes are generally considered past their prime -- whether they admit it or not." - Coach Rio, Men's Health Philippines vol.59, March 2010 issue.

It was that statement that somehow brought my athletic blood to life. I'm still at my early 30s (which I have been denying for the past 2 years already, lol), but a little 3-4 more years, and I will be already considered past my prime! That's not much of a big deal but I don't want either to be dreaming of beating more of my younger PRs when I'm already in my middle-age, or regretting that I haven't made myself stronger so that I can still somehow be at par according to my age. After all, my motivation for running and getting fit is the fact that we will all get old but getting fit, strong, and healthy is just like a financial investment without the risk. If you save or invest now, you will reap the rewards later!

With that said, I have changed my thought, my plan of not doing races anymore for this year. Since the 21K races appealed most to me (sorry for 42K and beyond distances), my target this time is to become much better on this distance than what I previously am. But of course, I will still continue running on trails, some longer distances (maybe one Marathon and Ultramarathon) and other shorter distances such as the 10Ks, after all, it was my previous favorite distance.

So, here's my initial target races for 2013, courtesy of RunRio and Unilab Active Health calendar.

Battle of the Sexes - Postponed

The most awaited Battle of the Sexes will be set back for a few weeks due to safety and security reasons as cited by the Philippine Reclamation Authority (PRA) who has the jurisdiction over some area of the race route.

It means however, that those who weren't able to register now have another chance to show up on March 3, 2013 and join the battle as registration has also been extended. Read the letter below from the RunRio team regarding this postponement, then head on to registration sites and get your slot now!

Dear Runners,

It is with deep regret that we have to announce that the Battle of the Sexes race event which was originally scheduled to happen on Saturday, January 26, 2013 as a night-time race, is postponed.

Despite being able to acquire approval/permits from the SM Mall of Asia and Pasay City authorities, we will be unable to organize a night-time scheduled race because we were not granted approval by the Philippine Reclamation Authority (PRA) who has jurisdiction on vital portions of the Battle of the Sexes race route.

Citing safety and security concerns, the PRA have declined to provide approval on the use of the road under their authority/jurisdiction on a Saturday night race.

With this being the case, RunRio in partnership with Hotel Sofitel will need to reschedule and redesign the said race as a Sunday-morning event, thus the need for postponement.

The new schedule of the Battle of the Sexes race will be on Sunday, March 3 at 5:30AM.

In line with the postponement, registration period will be extended until February 17 for Online Registration and until February 24 for In-Store Registration.

Runners who have already registered for this event need not worry since their registration will still be valid for use on the same event. For further concerns, you may send us an email via feedback@runrio.com with the subject “Battle of the Sexes” or call us in any of the following RunRio hotlines:

Globe – 0927 347 7700

Smart - 0929 717 8164

Landline - (632) 703-1736

Our apologies for this inconvenience and we look forward to seeing you at the rescheduled Battle of the Sexes event!

Sincerely yours,

The RunRio Team

4th RunRio Trilogy - 2013 Run United Series

Can you see how time flies so fast? It's already the 4th year of the RunRio Trilogy, and these series still keeps on getting better and better in each installations. The first leg of the very 1st RunRio Trilogy was already superb, yet, RunRio Inc. and Unilab Active Health still gives a lot of surprises for the runners.

Ever responsive to the runners’ feedback, Unilab Active Health and RunRio are now focusing on longer distances to be in step with the requirements of progressive runners who want to better their personal records and outdo themselves in every race.

If last year, the Trilogy was concluded by a 4th leg - the RUPM, with a big, plate-like medal, this year's medal will be much better. A Batman-shaped medal will be on your neck for the 3rd leg, and if you completed all the other 2 legs, the 3-medals combined will unfold a heavier, thicker, better-looking, Superman logo-shaped United medal.

“We noticed a trend during the previous years’ races that the slots for longer distances get filled up faster. There were instances when we had to open up more slots. So, by focusing on longer distances, we will be able to accommodate more runners,” said Alex Panlilio, Head of Unilab Active Health.

Coach Rio dela Cruz added: “This is in line with our plan to be part of the growth and journey of Filipino runners. It just goes to prove that the local running community is more mature, that is why we also launched the Run United Philippine Marathon (RUPM) last year. Filipino runners have leveled up.”

Getting excited now? Let's move on to the race details:

Year-End Race

Yes, you read it right! I know 2013 has already stepped ahead and I should have done a kick-start run by now, but you see, I haven’t found yet the self-push that I need to fire-up my running shoes. So, bear with me for a while as I share to you my 2012 year-end race (and soon to be posted my other pending accounts of my race adventures). Besides, I don’t really want to just put away the great things of this year-end event without sharing and immortalizing it through this blog.

It was already the 2nd staging of this event, and to some, if not most of the runners in this Cool City have been watching out for, to be their year-end race also. On regular days, this same route has already become a favorite training ground of some grass-root runners and those aiming to better themselves. As for me, the route was no longer that much unknown as I have already hiked it thrice when most of the road was still rocky trail, and also had my share of training here once in preparation for my first Ultra-Marathon (T2N 2011).

I’m talking about the 2nd Mile-Hi Radar Run – a short 8-km distanced elevation run yet challenging enough to give the participants an overhaul of their lungs with high-altitude and fresh air, organized by Mr. Jonel Mendoza of the FrontRunner magazine.

The two radars shot from Mt. Sto. Tomas
I arrived at my hometown (Baguio) 15-hours before the event, and upon knowing that Ate Glo and Allan (my co-Six:30 Running team mates) were also in Baguio, I did everything at my SMS-power to convince them to also join, of which, I did succeed! Good thing there were still 2 race-kits remaining from Ms. Melan (Event Coordinator), meaning the race was really meant for both of them.

Next morning, realizing that I haven’t done a good hills training yet nor any kind of training for the past weeks, I decided to jog down and start my freezing blood going to the Hotel where Ate Glo and Allan are staying, that was a good 2.5-km run which was still not enough to drip out my sweat yet good enough to activate my quads and lungs. While waiting for them, I saw Marcelo Bautista (the Baguio runner who’s been topping the Country’s recent Ultramarathons) on his running short-shorts pacing himself southwards, going to the race venue.

Some familiar faces
Arriving at Green Valley in Brgy. Dontogan, we did not get out from Ate Glo’s car until 8-minutes before the gun-start due to the very cold breeze which made the pre-race more chilling. At the starting line, we saw some friends on vacation who also joined the event, the atmosphere then became warmer as we saw familiar faces and chatted with them. I haven’t seen Franc Ramon yet but I’m sure he was just around since he registered ahead of me right after he learned about the event.

Then the gun-start was fired!

I swear, the radar was just there!
Based on the elevation profile of Franc (using his Garmin), the starting elevation was at 1,490-masl (meters above sea level), slowly gaining at the first 3-kilometers of not so flat, not so hilly concrete road, while the rest was already pure uphill with a total elevation gain of 483-masl. It’s not really that much, but the change in altitude and air density would make someone new to this puff like a tired horse.

Some runners taking a breather at the highest peak.
To the right is the road going to the radar
Going higher, one can’t really help but be amazed by the cool fogs (take note, it’s not a smog like in the Metro), the descending clouds, the cliffs of the mountain ranges, the smell of the red soil and pine trees, the morning moon which was still peeking, and the slowly shining sun. If you’re not the nature-lover type, you will still enjoy the scenery of the strongly built houses at the opposite mountains and a top-view of the Marcos Hi-way tunnel and the long stretch of its elevated pass. At past 5-km mark, you will see the centralized aircon of Baguio (the two-radars) becoming bigger and bigger as you get higher, then farther once again as you turn from the winding roads.

Allan and Ate Glo a few meters away from the Finish line
The location of the finish line though wasn’t at what I expected – the radar station itself, but about 300-meters farther towards Mt. Sto. Tomas (just a segue, the two radars are located at Mt. Cabuyao and not Mt. Sto. Tomas). Nevertheless, the surprises at the finish line weren’t also the one that I’m expecting. For a mere Php 350.00 of registration fee, it already offered a lot for the participants. It wasn’t just the basic loots such as the singlet, the simple plastic finisher’s medal, and the roving ambulance, but also of keeping the race as a green event as there were no disposable cups at the water stations, but runners were obliged to bring their own drinking bottle. And as I’ve mentioned, I loved that the finish line offered the runners a boiled-egg, a hot coffee (I don’t drink coffee but the cold temperature made me do so), pan-de-sal, and a banana. The kind of breakfast that I do eat whenever I’m home!

Sir Jonel announcing the winners
Overall, the event was really more than great! Thanks to Sir Jonel for always making sure that he has a great race to offer just before the year ends in Baguio!

with Jun Rodillas

30-Minutes Fitness Now in Quezon City

About more than a year ago (Sep 2011), a fitness club that pioneered the Country’s express fitness opened its branch in Makati – a good news for the people in the south. That time, I mentioned in my blog post that I hope someday they will also open their 3rd branch in Quezon City where it is more accessible to us who are in the Northern Metro area.

The People behind the 360 Fitness Club must have heard my plea back then, as to my surprise and gladness, they unveiled their 3rd branch to the Public last Saturday (Jan. 12, 2013), and guess where? Yeap, just in Timog area – a jog away from my turf! What great news, right? It was a great opening day as it was graced by a lot of people, fitness and non-fitness enthusiasts alike.

The 1st active station and last (20th) active rest station
Suspended pull-ups
Upon my arrival past 1:00PM at their new branch, I was welcomed by one of the Staff who is also entertaining other visitors and asked me if I would be interested to join their Circuit challenge, at which I excitingly obliged. Jeff Lo (PinoyFitness) was also there and introduced me to Ms. Jopi (Joana Piñon), the Managing Director. Some of the visitors were already sweating and puffing at the circuit trials, which gave me a good idea of what we might be doing for the circuit challenge.

Coach Chappy explaining the details of the Circuit Challenge
After a few minutes of waiting, Head Coach Christopher “Chappy” Callanta called us in at a bigger room to explain the mechanics of the circuit challenge. There were a number of us who are participating and we were divided into five groups of 4 members. Each group will compete by completing 4 different sets of circuit exercises simultaneously. The 4 circuit exercises were composed of 3 active workouts and 1 active rest: 1) Burpees; 2) 40-lbs dumbbell squats; 3) kettlebell swings; and 4) jumping jacks (active rest).

Circuit challengers doing the sample burpees
Participants warming-up for the Circuit Challenge
The member who was doing the burpees will have to complete 12 counts while the other members are doing the other circuit workouts. After 12 burpees, the members will rotate in doing the workouts and will continue until the time is up. The winning team was determined through the total number of dumbbell squats performed all throughout the 15-minutes allotted time, of which our team completed a total of 100 counts while the winning team – Teacher Cheryl’s team completed a total of 144, wow, that’s a lot!

That short circuit challenge really proved to be challenging, specially that I’ve been in hibernation for quite a number of weeks already. The dumbbell squats made my quads burn and the burpees made me puff hard – these two workouts were like a reminisce of the Metafit challenge of Immuvit. The kettlebell swing was a new workout to me of which I think I haven’t done properly, while the jumping jack still proved to be still a hard one when you’re already out of breath and leg strength.

360 Fitness Club does not only offer Circuit trainings but as well as other 30-minute programs and fun group classes such as Suspension trainings, Yoga, Running, Dance classes like Zumba and Pole dance.

Complete the circuit now and get a redefined total fitness.
