Do Runners Run and Cyclists Ride Faster on Special Foods or Drinks?

Exercisers spend more than 7.5 billion dollars a year on sports drinks and sports foods because they think that they will help them exercise, train and compete better, faster and longer.

Yet, this month, studies show that runners taking raisins ran as fast and as long as those who took a commercial candy called Sports Chews (Journal of Sports Sciences, June 2012;9(1):27), and that cyclists rode 24 miles just as fast when they ate bananas and drank water as when they took a commercial sugared sports drink (PLOS ONE, May 17, 2012).

Here are my recommendations for taking food and drink during intense exercise or competition:

LASTING LESS THAN AN HOUR: fit athletes do not need to take any food or drink, except they may need water in warm weather.

LASTING MORE THAN AN HOUR: Take sugared drinks just before you begin and frequently during intense exercise.

LASTING MORE THAN THREE HOURS: Take sugared drinks before you begin and frequently during intense exercise. Eat the food of your choice (fruit or sugar- added foods such as whole grain bars, etc.), plus a source of salt. We use potato chips or peanuts. You cannot get enough salt in a drink because it would taste awful.

LASTING MORE THAN FIVE HOURS: You need water, sugar, salt, and protein. Up to ten percent of the energy to power your muscles during exercise is supplied by protein stored in muscles.

However, you do not lose enough muscle to harm performance during exercise until you have been exercising for more than five or six hours, so you do not need to take a protein food to improve performance during exercise until you have been exercising for about five hours. Protein sources include whole grain bars, nuts, meat, fish, chicken, or dairy products.

I eat whole grain bars that contain a lot of sugar and some protein just before, and sometimes during, all races lasting more than an hour.


How fast you can move is limited by the time it takes to bring oxygen into muscles. Since sugar requires less oxygen than fat or protein, you move faster when muscles use sugar for energy.

You have an almost infinite amount of fat for your muscles to burn for energy, but a very limited amount of sugar stored in your muscles and liver. Top athletes start to run low on sugar after an hour of intense exercise. You may start to run out of sugar before then. The only signal you will get when you start to run out of sugar is that you will slow down and have to work harder to go slower because burning mostly fat for energy will increase your oxygen requirements. Also, your muscles may start to hurt, and you may start to feel very tired.


Even on the coldest days, you sweat when you exercise and as you keep on exercising, you will eventually run low on salt. The first sign may be slowing down as lack of salt weakens muscles. You may also suffer muscle cramps.

Adidas King of the Road (KOTR) 2012

Demonstrating the brand’s exceptional commitment to the sport, the first adidas KOTR Southeast Asia Championship, held last year, unified runners from all around the region. Run for Light - Inspired by a Blind Runner

Saturday morning, it was raining since a few days ago and this bed-weather almost made me hibernate at my Saturday race schedule. I alarmed one and half hour prior but ended waking-up with only 45-minutes left before the 10K gun-time so in just less than 15-minutes, I was all geared-up and headed to BGC without taking a bath (yeah, pardon me!).

I arrived at the venue in Minds Museum just a few minutes before 5:30AM, and luckily, the gun-start was re-scheduled to 5:40AM where Ka-Nonoy and Ka-Totoy (they're not related to each other) also arrived to participate on this fund-raising run for Stiftung Solarenergie's beneficiaries.

The event was gathered by no less than 300 runners but at the same time, it was also attended by some Celebrities like Mr. Kim Atienza and Mr. Gilbert Remulla (whom I didn't recognized at first). There were also some students who participated for the event, and I guess, if the rain didn't come, it would've been well-attended.

Just a minute before the gun-start, the rain started to pour, and as we were sent-off, it showered heavily on us (now I'm taking a bath) and sometimes the wind would also blow right in-front of us, creating heavy resistance coupled with our gears getting heavy with the water. As we push heavily, I saw two members of Team R.O.X - the blind runner Aga and Gado - Aga's ever-supportive runner-guide. I first saw them during the HyperSports Get Fit run and I knew they are such a strong, fast, and one of the best running partners.

Since the main guest of the event was absent (the sun's solar energy) and TD "Ferdie" was on the loose, I thought I would be able to maintain a race pace throughout the 10KM distance so I followed Gado and Aga's pace, to observe how they run, hydrate, and how do they do their tag-team racing. I was trailing behind them until about more than 8 kilometers and all I could say is that "they're both magnificent and amazing"!

If you don't know that Aga is a blind runner, you wouldn't even notice his disability. He is fast, full of stamina and perseverance! There were times that I would hear Gado asking Aga if he want to hydrate or take it slow but Aga would just reply that he is still okay, and thus they go on without taking walk breaks. Such a great man, a blind runner running for a cause, running for light not for his own, but for other people. I got inspired with their determination that I was also challenged not to take walk breaks until they do so (dakilang buntot)!

My attention went away at the remaining 2 to 3 kilometers from the finish line when I noticed that Kuya Nonoy was already far from me and still going strong, he looks light while running barefoot. I wondered how does the wet asphalt and concrete felt on each strides of his feet. I was thinking that it could have a massaging and cooling effect that I almost wanted to take off my shoes already and let my feet also feel the ground.

Getting near the finish line, I tried to speed up more and keep up with Kuya Nonoy. My chest was already heavy and I'm puffing hard but thanks for the sun's absence that I was still able to push and push myself more. Just a few meters to the finish line, I got close to Kuya Nonoy and cheered him "Go Kuya Noy!" and as he heard my voice, he added more speed and unexpectedly, we both sprinted and gave our all for a chase towards the finish line.

Kuya Nonoy got his PR and I also got my new 10K sub-50 surpassing my previous sub-50s two years ago now ranking 2nd as my best 10K PR (I still can't beat my first best)!

On the other hand, I've noticed that Kuya Kim was also that fast as well and on my approximation, he might have also finished below 50-minutes and Gilbert Remulla might have crossed the finish line within 50 to 55 minutes.

During the awarding, the top 10 runners from each category were picked. Unfortunately, some of the runners who got in were no longer present to claim their medal. Perhaps they didn't know that there will be an award for the top 10 finishers. On the 10K, Mark Hernz of Team PPB got called-in as the 6th place finisher. Other awards were biggest delegation were Shell got the place and they were given an option to choose their own beneficiary for Solar-powered lanterns.

Natures Trail Discovery Run - 2nd Leg

The mountain ranges composing the watersheds of Tanay, Rizal are at a critical level with its natural water resources dwindling at faster rate due to destruction of its forests, rivers and water springs which usually oozing with water all-year run but are now becoming drier in the summer months, a clear sign that if the destruction of the forests continue we may no longer have the watersheds but just dry parched mountains. Wealth of the forest must benefit the upland communities not waste them.

Nature’s Trail Discovery Run 2nL will bring runners to new adventures of trail running as well as promoting environmental awareness the reforestation of the watersheds of Tanay, Rizal and the development of upland communities through the mountain sports tourism promotion. It is a 3-leg series of Trail Run race. The first Leg was held last May 27. The series will run in different trail routes at the foot and top of hills and mountains, running through small trails, dirt roads, rivers, and inside the forested areas for complete trail experience. It shall serve as qualifying races for the annual “Love A Tree” which will have its next run on February 2013.

Those taking their cars or have their own transportation coming from anywhere in Metro-Manila must take the Marcos Highway in Marikina / Cainta straight ahead and passing through Cogeo and Boso-boso in Antipolo, not leaving the Marcos Highway the landmark is the Palo Alto and Garden Cottage. From Garden Cottage it will be just about 12 kilometers to the Tanay Adventure Camp the main venue. Turn left at an asphalt road just in front of Pranjetto and follow from the highway its about 500 meters.

Awards and Prizes:

Cash Prize for the 1st to 3rd place winners of both categories for each male and female winners. Pimco pays the cash prize in the form of check “Pay to Cash” during the awarding ceremony at the site which can be withdrawn or deposit on the date printed on the check. Cash Prize is given in “PAY TO CASH CHECK” which the winners can cash on the date printed on the check. This is important in case a challenge or complaint against the winning runner is lodge with the organizer for breach or violations of the Rules and Regulations.

Cash Prizes #1, #2, and #3 given below for the 21km are applicable generally to both male and female runners in the 2nL.

Whether the foreign runner is world class or elite class of runner, the organizer does not distinguished. The runners both Filipinos and foreign, slow or fast, elite or beginners are bunched together as a whole competing with each other without any distinction. Since we don’t distinguish or pre-qualify foreign runners and Filipino runers, we have different levels of awards and prizes for both the foreign runners and Filipino runners considering the majority of Filipino runners are still beginners and lacking in capability to give strong competition against the unknown foreign runners. Thus to equalize the possibility that there are foreign runners entering the race way way above the class of both Foreign and Filipino runners, we adopted rules on Awards and Prizes that make it available to the 99% Filipino runners comprising the race event in the 2nL to take part in the cash prizes and awards.

b. The Top 3 Filipino Runners come in first over other Filipino runners in the finish line after any other Foreign nationals in the field. The top 3 in order of their finishes

c. This shall not be applicable in the event that the Filipino runners come in as Champion or winning the 2nd Place or 3rd Place overall.

We recognized in 2nL the desire of many Filipino Runners in the 21km therefore to accommodate and give them the privilege of being honored too side by side with the foreign runners, we are giving awards and prizes to the Top 3 Filipino Finishers whether they will become champion, 2nd placer, 3rd placer or just finishing as top 3 among the Filipino runners.

Run: From Transition onto smooth cart paths

  • Body marking (race numbers) must appear on both upper arms and both legs.

  • Bikes must be racked at the designated spot of the bike rack in the transition area.

  • Bare torso biking or running is not allowed.

  • Vehicular traffic will be controlled but not closed.

  • Athletes must follow all traffic rules and watch out for his/her own road safety

  • DRAFTING IS NOT ALLOWED for all participants.

Another Step Toward Curing Cancer

This week a realistic cure for cancer was presented by Thomas Graeber of UCLA (Molecular Systems Biology, June 26, 2012). His team showed that depriving cancer cells of the sugar, glucose, kills them by causing the cancer cells to accumulate Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS). As ROS accumulate in cells, they damage the large molecules in cells, such as DNA and RNA, and cause apoptosis, the programmable death of cells. This specifically kills cancer cells without harming normal cells.


Chemotherapy and radiation are not effective treatments for cancer because they kill all cells, not just cancer cells. You cannot get a high enough dose to kill all of the cancer cells without killing too many normal cells. A cure for cancer will come from developing a "magic bullet" that will kill cancer cells and spare normal ones.

The researchers at UCLA showed that removing the sugar glucose, from cancer cells causes huge amounts of Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) to accumulate in cancer cells. Certain chemicals called tyrosine phosphates prevent ROS from accumulating in cells. Blocking tyrosine phosphates stops cancer cells from being able to remove ROS and causes even higher levels of ROS to accumulate in these cells. These very high levels of ROS revive apoptosis in the cancer cells and the cancer cells die as normal cells do.


The next step in curing cancer is to develop drugs that prevent glucose from entering cancer calls, and block tyrosine phosphates from removing ROS, so that ROS can kill the cancer cells. This treatment will provide the magic bullet that will kill cancer cells and spare normal ones. Scientists are getting very close to a cure for cancer. For more on this exciting research, see

Hidden Fact: Studies show that the natural way to kill cancer cells is by drinking a sugar-free lemon juice added with baking soda. It was found that lemon (Citrus limonun Risso) is a miracle product to kill cancer cells and is 10,000 times stronger than chemotherapy.

  9. For every video uploaded, we will donate Php 100.00 towards our goal of reaching one million pesos (Php 1M) for the first ever Filipino Olympic Gold Medalist.

HyperSports Get Fit Run

It was January when I first met the People and humble Athlete/Coaches of HyperSports Phils. Inc. (HSPI) at the 1st Session of their GetFit 2012 campaign. That session kicked my hybernating engines up and gave my start of year the fire needed to revive my lungs and maintain the healthy running lifestyle. But the busy and unforeseen circumstances made me unable to complete the Get Fit campaign, and was only visible for the last time at their 4th session.

Training the HyperSports way
A couple of months later, I missed the new faces I met at the HyperSports sessions, their humility, their enthusiasm for the trainings, and their lively attitude. Some of them I finally got to run with on a couple of races such as during the 3rd Merrell Adventure Run and Trek the T.E.C 2012. But last July 8, it was a reminiscing and a reunion event among the Runners and the HyperSports family at the HyperSports' Get Fit Run debut race held at Quirino Grandstand in Manila. Meeting some of my batch/classmates during the Get Fit sessions, I never knew that the event would be very homey, full of fun, lively and festive -- the kind of fun and festivity that most of us, and most of the pioneers experienced at the 1st Runfest in 2010.

The event was made more alive with the entertaining partnership of wit and humor of the two program hosts -- Sir RunningHost and Coach Edward Kho. Who knew that they will both make a good tandem and that Sir Edward is as talented, not only in terms of running, race organizing, but also with hosting?

This event is my first 21K road race for the year, my last one was still during the Run United Regional Series Cebu last December 2011 where I performed far below my usual 21K time.

The Race
Although I arrived early at the venue, I almost got late entering the assembly line for the 21K. Gladly for me, the gun-start was re-scheduled for a good 15 minutes to make sure that the whole route is ready and equipped for the arrival of the 21K runners. Ms. Lia who has our race kit arrived just in time for around more than 5 minutes before the new gun-start schedule, giving me just a few amount of time to warm-up. Sam (RunningNinja) who also represented Diadora Philippines Running Team with me positioned himself ahead at the starting line together with our friends at Team Reebok - Blas and Beep-beep.

The hyper hosts
When the gun-start was fired, I was still a bit puffing for air as I have just finished my warm-up a minute before the countdown, but I guess it helped as my breathing was already regulated as soon as I started running. My goal was just to finish again on my usual 21K finish time and an additional 5-minute room should I won't be able to make it in 2 hours.

As soon as we've turned to Roxas Blvd., I noticed one runner whom I always see speeding in most races, but at this point, it seems that he isn't running at his own speed. Judging on his movement, he doesn't look like injured so I thought that maybe he hasn't prepared much. Following his pace, we were speeding at an average of between 11.2 to 12.6 kph (I prefer the view of speed than pace), that's more than a few meters faster than my 10K race pace. Meaning soon enough, at around half-point I might be walking a lot already.

I tried to keep up at his pace until we reached Seaside Boulevard going to MOA where he just increased his speed little-by-little, and the gap between us slowly gained from just a mere arms-apart, then to a few meters-apart. His speed increased more and more until I can no longer close the gap and I could only see him as we face each other after the U-turn points. Looking at my watch, I was only running and maintaining a speed between 10.4 to 11.6 kph, while the guy I was chasing at, in my approximate might already be running at 12.5 to 13.5 kph. As soon as I hit the flyover, I can no longer see him. He was really fast!

Crossing the finish line, I didn't expect that I would be able to break my long-standing 21K (road) personal best cutting-off exactly 3-minutes from the 1st RunRio Trilogy Leg 2 race held two years ago - May 30, 2010.

Finish Time
I always base my personal record on the official gun-time instead of the chip-time because as soon as I hear the gun-start, it's also the signal for me to press the 'start' button on my timing watch. Although for this race, the race result's gun-time difference with my chip-time was a good 3-mins. and 13-secs., which is not possible since I was positioned just at 2 rows behind the front runners and it did not also took that long before I stepped out from the starting line's timing mat. While for the chip-time, it only has 1-second difference with my own personal timing based on my watch. Looking closely at the 21K race result, even those 1st to 3rd placers have 3-mins. and 13-secs. difference between their chip and gun-times so I think the system's gun-time has already started 3-mins. 13-secs. ahead before the actual gun-start.

Event in Review
For me, this race proved to be also one of the greatly organized, friendly, alive, and homey atmosphere event. The race was just like a fun run of close-relatives. I enjoyed every bit of it from before the gun-start, during the race, and even the post-race program and the camaraderie between the runners, there was no division aura of who's better and who's not.

Aside from this, the whole course was generally clean and there was only very few hydration cups littered along the route.

The timing used a reusable IPICO timing chip and runners have an option to return the timing chip after the race for a Php 50.00 refund. What's more impressive was that during the registration period, the participants who were holding a non-HyperSports IPICO timing chip were given an option to submit those timing chips upon registration, which entitled them of an Php 80.00 discount. These timing chips became usable for this event and were returned to the owner-participants together with their race kits. That's the real essence of reusability!

Although, as in all other races, there are always rooms for improvement, and here's my take for this race:
  1. Kilometer markers placed along the course would be great.
  2. Gun-start should be on-time, but for reason of re-ensuring the course's safety, the late gun-start is acceptable (the late gun-start though became an advantage to me also).
  3. No loop-cords or timing-mats placed on critical turning or U-turn points. I heard that some runners no longer crossed the flyover.
  4. More accurate race result next time.

Spain Supports Fight against Hunger in the Philippines

Coregasm Workout

I've recently chanced upon an article about core workouts from Women's Health, a kind of core workout to TIGHTEN your..... of course Core muscles.

I've only experienced doing the "hanging straight-leg raise" a few couple of times when I first enrolled on a gym but it never made into my regular programming, and I could say that these workouts are really challenging specially the "hanging side crunches". NSAIDs Do Not Block Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness

To make muscles larger and stronger, you have to damage muscles by taking an intense workout on one day, by feeling sore on the next day, and by going easy for as many days as it takes for muscles to heal and the soreness to go away. This soreness is called delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS).

A report from the annual meeting of the European League Against Rheumatism (June 11, 2012. Abstract FRI0457) showed that in exercisers with DOMS, taking non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as ketoprofin (100 mg twice a day) increased the amount of pain and delayed healing. Celecoxib (Celebrex, 200mg twice a day) treatment diminished total pain slightly. The authors state that "the inflammatory reaction following muscle injury is essential for recovery"

This supports other studies showing that competitive athletes do not benefit from taking NSAIDs. For example, Ibuprofen did not reduce elevated cytokine levels that signify muscle damage in ultra-marathon runners (Brain Behav Immun 2005; 9: 398-403).

Cobra Ironman 70.3 Takes To The Sea

The Cobra Energy Drink Ironman 70.3 Philippines takes to the sea in Cebu as the province hosts its fourth staging as well as the Alaska Milk Ironkids Triathlon on August 4 - 5, 2012.

After racing in a man-made lake the past three years participants will swim in open water as the Cobra Energy Drink Ironman 70.3 Philippines holds the 1.2-mile swim part in the sea starting at the beach of the Shangri-La's Mactan Resort & Spa in Mactan Island.

The province of Cebu will literally host the event with the 56-mile bike ride traversing four municipalities (Lapu Lapu, Mandaue, Cebu City and Talisay). The culminating 13.1-mile run will be at Punta Engano, Lapu Lapu City.

Race organizer Sunrise Events, Inc. promises to top the wildly successful races of the past three years assuring that that this year’s race will be its biggest, most exciting edition yet.

A huge field of 1,319 individuals and 115 relay teams from 31 countries, with 350 on the wait list, will test their strength and endurance once again as Ironman 70.3 Philippines provides another once-in-a-lifetime triathlon experience.

Alaska Milk Ironkids Triathlon on the other hand is for the youngsters. It is the local junior version of the international triathlon series, Ironman. It is open to kids age 6 to 14 years old and aims to promote an active lifestyle for kids to promote their health.

Leading the Cobra Energy Drink Ironman 70.3 Philippines are the professional triathletes including back-to-back champion Pete Jacobs of Australia. Jacobs, who has become a regular fixture of the Cobra Energy Drink Ironman 70.3 Philippines, will gun for an unprecedented third consecutive victory after winning the past two editions in 2010 and 2011.

He will have his hands full against Cobra Energy Drink Ironman 70.3 Philippines inaugural champion Terenzo Bozzone from New Zealand who won the 2009 race. Other male professionals include Fredrik Croneborg from Sweden, Justin Granger from Australia, Mathieu O'Halloran of Alaska TeamTBB Philippines who now lives in the Philippines and Jesse Thomas from the United States.

Defending champion Belinda Granger, also from Australia who is fresh from her triumph at the Century Tuna 5i50 Triathlon in Subic, aims for back-to-back titles against familiar face Bree Wee from the United States who was in third place last year. Run For Light

Stiftung Solarenergie launches latest initiative to light up off-grid homes
Millions of Filipinos in far-flung areas spend their days and nights without electricity. Without this basic necessity, work and study — and life itself — are severely hampered.

Research conducted by non-profit organization Stiftung Solarenergie - Solar Energy Foundation (StS) revealed that Filipino households with a monthly budget of P7,000 use 230 candles in one year, eight batteries in one month and a liter of kerosene each week. Apart from being very costly, these options often do not provide sufficient lighting and are dangerous fire hazards.

As part of its initiatives to equip off-­grid communities with sustainable lighting, StS is launching a benefit run called Run for Light.

The race, set on July 21, 2012 at the Bonifacio Global City in Taguig, will have race distances of 3K, 5K, and 10K, with registration fees of P400, P500 and P600 respectively.

Proceeds of the run will go to the funding of solar lamps for Stiftung Solarenergie’s beneficiaries. Joining the run will be newscaster and politician Gilbert Remulla, TV host Kim Atienza, and supply chain manager and TV personality Erwan Heussaff. “What moved me to join the run was the surprising fact that while 3 kilometers for us is a warm up run, this is the distance that rural villagers regularly walk just to charge their cellphones. We want to help change that through this run,” shared Kim Atienza.

Jim Ayala, Chairman of the Solar Energy Foundation, echoes Mr. Atienza’s thoughts. “StS is proud to organize the Run for Light event, as we move forward in our efforts to provide sustainable lighting solutions to those who need them most.”

“While our previous lighting campaigns such as Hike for Light and Ride for Light catered to hiking and motorcycle enthusiasts, Run for Light is something everyone can take part in. The variety of distances will allow both serious and casual runners to help us realize our goal of bringing light to the darkest places in the country,” he added.

Solar Energy Foundation’s past nationwide campaigns, Ride for Light, Hike for Light, and Sail for Light have helped distribute more than 1,300 solar home systems to over 100 communities all across the Philippines.

Alaska IronKids Triathlon 2012 Goes to Cebu

This August, all eyes will be on Cebu Province as it hosts this year’s much-anticipated sporting event for kids — Alaska IronKids Triathlon.

More than a hundred triathletes, 6 to 14 years old, are expected to show up at the starting lines at the Shangri-La Mactan Resort on August 5, hopefully surpassing the record number of 95 participants set last year at the CamSur Watersports Complex (CWC) in Pili, Camarines Sur. With their parents and family in tow to cheer for them, the event promises to be a family affair to remember.

Expected to defend their titles are frontrunners and early race favorites Tara Borlain and Eric Almendral, last year’s winners in the 6-8 y/o cataegory; Sophia Marie Vizcarra and Lance Vincent Plaza, winners of the 11-12 y/o category; and Magali Echauz and Justine Kyle Mapalo, winners of the 13-14 y/o category. Alaska IronKids is the junior counterpart of the world-renowned triathlon event IronMan where kids 6 to 14 years old race through three sporting events: Swimming, Biking and Running. The race is divided into four age categories: 6-8 years old, 9-10 y/o, 11-12 y/o and 13-14 y/o. It is open to kids who are new to the sport as well as those who have already competed in other triathlon events.

A year-long sporting event, Alaska IronKids has so far completed three legs this year — two marathons, held at University of Makati and Mall of Asia and an aquathlon, held at the Palms Country Club. Another triathlon is scheduled on October 23 at Pico de Loro, Batangas.

Since its inception in 2010, Alaska IronKids has become a symbol for active and healthy lifestyle among kids. Schools Run for School Rooms

About three (3) years ago in November 2009, Stradcom Corp. supported the very first McHappy Day fun run with the aim to raise funds for McDonald's two educational flagship programs. Our company was able to represent a number of 23 other office-mates that led to a fun and enjoyable race aside from the fact that it was well organized and a successful fund-raising running event.

Last Saturday (7th July 2012), Stradcom Corp. was once again present and have been a part of a good-cause for the event Schools Run for School Rooms, under the program of Athletes in Action as co-presented by FILA Philippines. The event aims to rebuild the still devastated school buildings brought by Typhoon Sendong more than half a year ago, particularly in Iligan and Cagayan De Oro wherein most of the elementary pupils are still trying to gain their schooling through the make-shift classrooms.

Race day, the event was well-attended by a lot of students from the different College, Universities, Rowing Teams, PNP, and other private organizations such as Stradcom which registered more than 100 participants (though was only attended by more or less 60%).

Having been "self-bound" to focus more attention this time not to my own race, but to my colleagues/office-mates, I opted to run under the 3K category so that I would have time to take their photos before the 10K and 5K gun-start, and as well as to capture their own moment while crossing the finish line. Although, with the almost 15,000 participants of the event, mostly students, I only saw less than what I expected to see among my colleagues before and after the race.

On the 3 distances, I think the 3K category was the most chaotic at the starting line and also the most participated category. Before the countdown, the runners in front assembled themselves a few steps ahead off the starting line, and while Georgina was still counting down with 4 seconds still remaining, these runners have already started to run, and some at the back began pushing those in front of them, like a domino effect, everybody started moving and running even while the gun-start has not yet fired. I don't know if Georgina was still able to run after that since it was like a stampede the moment everyone started the chase.

After about 13 minutes on my last stretch to the finish, there were still a lot of 3K participants who have just took their way out from the starting line (about 200 meters away). That's how big the 3K crowd was.

I rested for a few minutes, then I was about to take photos at the receiving end of the finish line, but many of those who have just crossed are already lumped in the area that the marshals can no longer control the crowd, closing the space for incoming runners. Anticipating that the crowd will grow larger, I just waited at some 20-30 meters ahead of the starting line. And there I thought I would have a good view and easily see my colleagues, but it was much harder to find them as I am not used to seeing most of them either without their eyeglass, or not in a corporate/office attire, sweating early in the morning, add to it that they are all wearing the same singlet design, and most of them still looks like one of the Student participants, lol!

Still, I had fun taking photos of them, and I even saw some of my runner-friends who also participated on this event like Sir Rene who tickled me on his way out from the starting line and on his way in to the finish line.

As for the race, here's my review and observations:
  1. Lack of crowd control at the starting line, runners already sprinted their way out even if there was still 3 or 4 more seconds left before the gun-start.
  2. The planned hydration stations was not followed, and the available water stations have ran out of hydrations.
  3. No turning markers at the intersections aside from the marshals doing some "patintero" to point the runners where they should turn.
  4. Here's a hulabaloo between a group of the leading runners and two marshals:
    Marshall 1 & 2 (holding 5K and 10K tarps): "5K diretso, 10K kakanan" 3K Lead Runners: "Saan ang 3K?" Marshall 1 & 2: "5K diretso lang, 10K kakanan" 3K Lead Runners: "Yung 3K saan?" Marshall 1 & 2: "5K po diretso lang" 3K Lead Runners: "Puro kayo 5K at 10K eh, kami saan?"
    They were never answered back, so they just opted to go straight where the 5K runners were pointed to.
  5. Lack of crowd control at the finish line.
  6. The 3K category turned out 50m short, while 10K runners complained that the distance was 1.7km short
  7. No proper timing for every runner
Anyway, in my own opinion though, and in contrast, the race was still fun and successful. At this race, what mattered to me was the spirit of camaraderie, the success of the fund-raising for our waiting young generations, and the enthusiasm that I saw from the students and the first-time runners who are innocent about the shortcomings of the race but are still very very glad and happy that they have finished their first official race. The fallback is, they might never have an official race result of their debut run.

Well, back in the '90s, I never had official results also of some of my races but it never made a big deal to me. Let's just take into account that not all races are meant as a "PR" race, so learn when to get serious by joining those races organized by well-known race directors who give great races, and when to just have fun (taper mode) and just run for the good cause -- not just your own cause!
