The Race of Rock Stars

What do the Afroman, Cinderella, and the country’s top social entrepreneur have in common? December 19 holds the answer. On that date, the three notable personalities from equally exciting yet distinct fields will head to one destination: Corregidor. And they will not just do a tour of the island, but will do more than that. They, together with close to 400 gritty and elite running aficionados, will rock the island and run in the inaugural Corregidor International Half-Marathon (CIHM).

Top race organizer and running coach par-excellance Rio dela Cruz, also known as the Afroman of the Philippine running community, has confirmed his participation in the CIHM, billed the last major race of the year. Rio, fresh from his blistering finish at the New York Marathon, is eyeing the top spot in the CIHM to become its first ever champion.

Gwen Zamorra, GMA Talent Center’s newest and fast-rising sweetheart, who’s endearing a throng of fans with her role as Cinderella in the top-rating telefantasia Grazilda, will see action in CIHM. Unknown to many, Gwen has been into running for almost two years to date, with a 15k and a half-marathon under her belt already. But in CIHM, she is out to prove that she is not a frail damsel in distress. On the contrary, she may just unwittingly cause distress to male participants whom she might outrun in the race.

Then, there’s the country’s prime social entrepreneur Illac Diaz who is deadset to bring one of his advocacies to the running community and at the same time prove that his mountaineering stamina is no fluke. Illac is excited to be part of CIHM as he sees the race’s design akin to his ecological advocacy and a perfect venue to measure his remarkable fitness level.

With the participation of these three interesting personalities, the anticipation for the first Corregidor International Half-Marathon is fast approaching its fever-pitch climax. Close to 400 runners, and still counting, are rushing to register for this historic footrace on the hallowed grounds of Corregidor, known as The Rock. The composition of participants is nothing but out of the ordinary. From age to professional background the race looks remarkable. The youngest participant is 18 while the oldest, so far, is 67 years old. The professions of registered participants paint an interesting picture. Participants vary from lawyers, physicians, dentists, IT specialists, human resource practitioners, engineers, and even band artists. Likewise, a huge number of runner bloggers will see action in the race, with no less than Jinoe Gavan, the top honcho and moderator of the country’s biggest running forum and blogsite Takbo.ph will make his mark on the race course of CIHM. Surprisingly, the number of female contenders almost approximates the number of their male counterparts. Definitely, it will be interesting to find out how the gender war will be played out in the race.

And to further escalate the excitement of CIHM, Session Road, one of the country’s sought after bands, will rock it out for the Victory Party of CIHM, in the evening of December 19 at the island. During the party itself, exciting prizes will be raffled off for participants. Lucky participants stand the chance to run away with a gift certificate for a 2-night & 3-day stay at Two Seasons Hotel Boracay, Holster Jelly Sandals, trendy running shoes, Sun Cruises gift certificates, and cool items from Coleman.

Registration has been extended to December 4 and will run daily from 4pm to 8pm (beginning Monday, November 29) at ROX in Bonifacio High Street. For more race details, visit www.corregidor2010.runningmate.ph.

The Beauty and Grandeur of Kaos

Las Vegas Meets Broadway in a one-of-a-kind spectacle, first time in the Philippines. Presenting the good wizard Enrique Polo with the amazing white lion KAOS, the adorable white tiger SITO and the yellow tiger BETTY.

NEWPORT CITY, Pasay - In a medieval kingdom, a lonely prince peers into a magical mirror and falls in love with a beautiful maiden from the future. As the past and the future converge, the two discover a love that transcends time, prevailing over a scheming adviser and numerous obstacles.

This at a glimpse is the story of KAOS, a visual and musical spectacle unlike anything the country has ever seen.

A Convergence of world class talent

Set to be Resorts World Manila's first exclusive production, KAOS was conceptualized with international audiences in mind. The story, a timeless tale of love, is an engaging experience for the whole family. But what truly sets it apart is the combination of internationally acclaimed acts that it weaves seamlessly together in one show.

Kaos will feature celebrated stage thespians in the leading roles. Livewire singer and theatre actor Gian Magdangal will play the valiant prince, half-Pinay Canadian Idol standout Martha Joy will take on the part of the heroine, while versatile veteran performer Joel Trinidad will don the role of the scheming Adviser.

The three will lead a strong cast sure to captivate audiences with their performances of original songs specially created for the show, with no less than the Manila Symphony Orchestra providing the musical score.

Central to the story is none other than the title character, Kaos, who happens to be a real and rare white lion.

Kaos is part of the menagerie of world-renowned animal performers specially trained by Spanish master illusionist Enrique Polo, who will be part of the show along with his other lions and tigers.

Breathtaking acrobats from China and the Power Duo, a world renowned act from Belarus, will test the limits of physical endurance with their riveting performances.

Stunt motorcyclists from Spain will defy gravity in the astounding Cycle of Life, while the Human Time Machine performers from South America will showcase superb balance and synchronization.

Hip Hop dance champions Philippine All Stars will energize the show with their winning moves.

Behind KAOS is a world class production team. Andrew Botha from South Africa designed the magnificent set pieces, while seasoned costume designer Liudmila Karpinka brought to life elaborate and beautifully detailed medieval and futuristic costumes for the story. Veterans of various Star Cruises productions, Khmelnytsky Oleksandr and Donchanka Nataliya collaborated on the amazing choreography.

Resorts World Manila's Colin Kerr leads the show as Executive Producer, with Sviatlana Burkun as Production Manager.

Only at Newport Performing Arts Theater

Audiences will be able to catch KAOS up to eight times weekly at the Newport Performing Arts Theater. A Runner’s Journey to Her 1st Int'l Marathon

When the going gets rough, the tough get going. While some go running. In a generation where everything is handed to us in an instant, one might consider this sport primitive because hitting the pavement with your rubber shoes is as simple as breathing.

Running is a sport that fuels ones' drive to start their journey but take determination to finish. It is every runner’s dream to cross that finish line, and yet we forget that the journey is just as important.

Kassy Pajarillo, 26, is a freelance Media Relations cum Events Coordinator whose aim in life is to check off every item in her bucket list before it becomes overdue or impossible to reach. Not always starting as such, earlier in her life she had a serious bout of hives and was induced with heavy dosages of steroids as medication, and her weight soared with no caloric effort. To her disdain, depression had set in.

Running had become the outlet that she needed to motivate herself out of her challenges. She ran in pace with the life that she wanted – a healthier one. She engaged in Bikram Yoga; got a certification as a TRX trainer, now offering her expertise to friends, family, and enthusiasts; while on the weekends, if not in a marathon, she’s in the ocean surfing.

Also a self-declared flexitarian, her zest for life has been an insatiable journey towards health and fitness, and it’s a wonder how everyone else had kept pace with her. Still with running as her first love, Kassy is slowly but surely approaching the next item to be checked off her list – to run in an international marathon.

Running for a cause

Beginning this journey with a few local marathons here and there for almost a year, vigorous training has not stopped for Kassy whose breather were a few surf sessions in between and the occasional yoga cravings. This, she believes, is what is expected for her first international marathon in the Standard Chartered Marathon Singapore.

With a clear direction and sheer determination, Kassy will be running a full 42.2KM marathon in the beautiful city of Singapore come December. She admits that although it will be a challenge to complete her first destination marathon race, she is especially motivated by the excitement of knowing that it will benefit such a worthy cause – the communities and families of the Maple Tree Foundation.

The Maple Tree Foundation’s vision is to help deprived and underserved mountain communities live healthy, productive, and peaceful lives with sustainable resource development programs that provide basic services, livelihood development, and education. For this, they need not to stay as less privileged citizens around Manila believing it will make their lives easier, when in fact they can do this comfortably in their own hometowns. Maple Tree founders are Canadian, Kassy figured, if these Canadians have been helping our citizens, Filipinos should too. And she did, pledging and successfully raising PHP 10,000 to help in this cause.

Kassy explains, “Whether it is to lose weight or to run for a cause, once you've achieved that first kilometer to a mile, you'll be proud of yourself by finishing one race after another. There's no clear explanation on what the runner's high is, it varies per person, but it definitely gives you a lot of lessons that you can apply in life like patience and determination; goal setting; and achieving with proper training. Just like life, vision without action is merely a dream.”

Kassy dreams to finish her first international marathon with a smile on her face proudly knowing she finished.

It’s never too late to help Kassy run for Maple Tree Foundation. On 5 December 2010. You may read more through her active lifestyle blog Flexitarian Runaholic Diary; sponsorships, goods, books and merchandise are welcome for the benefit of Maple Tree Foundation.

To Kassy, an advanced Congratulations to you, and I know God will continue to bless you and guide you in all your dreams, your generous effort and cause. Finish strong Kassy!

Magsimula Ka

Last November 19, 2010, our Company's CEO gave us a ticket for the Musical play of "Magsimula Ka" at the Music Museum in Greenhills, San Juan, Metro Manila.

"Magsimula Ka" is an OPM composed by Marlo Sanchez and popularized by the voice of singer Leo Valdez.

Through the genuine creation of Gines Tan and Nestor Torre, the original Filipino hit musical play "Magsimula Ka" was born, and was presentated by Spotlight Artists Centre under the direction of Robert SeƱa.

Magsimula Ka Lyrics
Magsimula ka, batiin ang kay gandang umaga
Ng may ngiti sa iyong mga mata
Sa pagkakaidli gumising na
Ang buhay ay masaya
Palalagpasin mo ba

Magsimula ka, tuparin ang pangarap mong tunay
Habang ang lakas iyo pang taglay
Sa paghihintay baka masanay
Sayang naman ang buhay mawawala ng saysay

(Refrain)
Iisa lang ang buhay mo
Kumilos ka, gamitin mo
Kung may nais ang puso mo
Mangarap ka, abutin mo
Upang ito'y makamit mo
Magsikap ka, simulan mo

Magsimula ka, pilitin ang tuklasin ang hanap
Madanas man ang maraming hirap
Ang mithiin mo pag naging ganap
Langit ng pagsisikap iyo nang malalasap

(Repeat refrain 2x)

Upang ito'y makamit mo
Magsikap ka, simulan mo

Coca-cola Christmas Caravan

Shake up the happiness. Wake it up, wake up the happiness. It’s Christmas time!

Once again, the country’s one and only partner in opening up the true spirit of the holiday season, Coca-Cola, rolled down the highly anticipated Coca-Cola Christmas Caravan and the annual Araneta Center Giant Tree Lighting last November 12, 2010 at the Araneta Coliseum parking lot. The well-loved beverage brand treated guests to an experience like no other when it painted the town red and led all the festivities, keeping true to fulfilling its tradition of bringing everybody together to usher in a magical Christmas.

Kicking off the day’s funfair was a grand parade led by a convoy of Coca-Cola Christmas trucks carrying two of the hottest youth icons of today and Coca-Cola ambassadors Kim Chiu and Enchong Dee with teen celebrities Empress Schuck, Joseph Marco, Matt Evans and the Pinoy Big Brother Teen Clash of 2010 housemates Ivan Dorschner, James Reid, Ryan Bang, Bret Jackson, Tricia Santos, Jenny Sol, Devon Seron and Fretzie Bercede, Starstruck idols Kris Bernal, Steven Silva, Rocco Nacino, Enzo Pineda and Diva Montelaba along with the Philippine Navy Band which marched along and rocked out the Araneta Center with lively renditions of popular Christmas jingles.

Right after the caravan spread cheers across the upbeat hub, more and more surprises were opened up as the energetic duo of Nicole Hyala and Chris Tsuper welcomed guests to the various game, activity and photo booths lined up by Coca-Cola just before the official tree lighting ceremony started. The renowned Love Radio tandem DJ’s bonded and shared an early Noche Buena feast with the celebrity guests, granted some of the guests’ heartfelt wishes and gave away raffle prizes to lucky folks all through out the afternoon.

In no time, all the rush and thrill finally led to the much-awaited lighting of the Giant Christmas Tree situated at the heart of Araneta Center, a celebrated custom since 1981. The exciting countdown to the “it-moment” was joined in by officials from the local government, Araneta Center and The Coca-Cola Company along with Kim Chiu and Enchong Dee along with other personalities and celebrity guests. Standing at almost 100ft. this year’s tree is bedecked with more than 10, 000 lights and hundreds of stars and Coca-Cola Christmas balls, with huge ribbons and colorful gift boxes as accents. Through the years, it has been a beacon of hope among the Filipinos; a most cherished icon that signals the beginning of the holiday season and reminds us to always believe in the magic and happiness it brings, the same way Coca-Cola inspires.

“We are so happy that we are part of this very momentous affair - to light up happiness and open up a magical Christmas season with our favorite drink, Coca-Cola! That’s what this occasion is all about- for us to remember that we would always have Coca-Cola to energize our bodies with its delicious taste and fizz as we celebrate with the ones closest to our hearts and to refresh our spirits so we can all enjoy life’s goodness,” says Coca-Cola ambassador Enchong Dee.

Unlike in the previous years, Coca-Cola gave the amazed partakers more reasons to light up happiness among themselves and others around them as it held the first-ever simulated lights and sounds show. The magical harmony of lively Christmas anthems and dazzling beams that sparkled among the Coca-Cola caravan up to the giant tree culminated to a fireworks display, which left guests in high spirits.

Indeed it was a day of wonderful surprises, moreover when Coca-Cola also launched the Coca-Cola Contour Glass promo. “The Coca-Cola contour glass is one of this season’s fun, ultimate merry must-haves that will surely complete our Noche Buena bonding and allow us to keep refreshing ourselves with the deliciously fizzy cola drink we all love. It’s available in five perky colors such as red, yellow, violet and green and the latest addition to the bunch, the aquamarine contour glass. Let’s make moments count this Christmas by sharing them together. Let’s make it more colorful with an ice-cold Coke and these cool contours,” says Coca-Cola ambassador Kim Chiu.

It’s so easy to take home all five Coca-Cola Christmas Contour Glasses: Buy Coca-Cola, Coke Light, Coke Zero, Sprite or Royal Tru Orange in any of the 500ml, 750ml, 1L, 1.5L and 2L packs. Look under the Santa cap for the “Coke Glass” text and collect 2 more regular Coca-Cola Santa caps and exchange these caps for one Coca-Cola Christmas Contour Glass from any 7 Eleven store, selected sari-sari stores or public markets and Coca-Cola Sales offices nationwide. You may redeem from November 15 to December 31, 2010 only.

This Christmas, let us all open and celebrate magical moments together shared with nothing less than the irreplaceable sparkle that uniquely refreshes and makes us happy- Coca-Cola. Energizing Christmas Spirit. Open Coca-Cola, Open Happiness.

Mother Nature - A Health Expert

Modern life is full of contradictions. Interest in natural wellness is at an all-time high – and so are stress levels. A 24/7 lifestyle and perpetual multi-tasking leads us to demand maximum return from every peso and every calorie.

Yet for most urbanites, 100% health perfection is simply not realistic. Our daily trip to work exposes us to toxins and pollution; sleeplessness, convenience food and inadequate exercise are facts of modern office life.

Funny then, to fight these new ills with wisdom from an old source: Mother Nature. In the days when “organic” was the rule rather than the exception, balanced health could be found as close as the family garden. Humble, homegrown malunggay kept generations of Pinoys hardy and strong, without ever setting foot in a gym.

MLO: Make Life Outstanding
From that inspiration comes MALUNGAI LIFE OIL: an all-natural supplement that unlocks the disease-fighting powers of moringa olifera in extracted, highly concentrated oil. A product of proudly Filipino company Manila Nature’s Link, Malungai Life Oil is the only oilbased malunggay supplement in the market today.

Rich in Vitamin C, calcium, antioxidants and essential amino acids, malunggay has long been associated with benefits that are more relevant than ever. These include higher energy, increased immunity, and helping to manage three of today’s main health concerns: blood sugar, blood pressure and cholesterol.

In fact, while it is still being studied, malunggay oil also shows promise not only in preventing cancer but in easing the painful effects once it is already developed.* The key to it all is chlorophyll, engine of the plant’s powerful conversion of energy. By distilling both seeds and leaves into a pure, cold-pressed oil, MLO maximizes malunggay’s chlorophyll and renders it, in the words of a medical expert, “preserved, conserved and available.”

This means that malunggay’s health benefits can be delivered with more stability and consistency than in the dried powder that was previously available. So you get a synergistic combination of nutrients which normally can be obtained only from separate food sources.

MALUNGAI LIFE OIL. Pure, potent power from Mother Nature – in convenient, concentrated form, perfect for getting the most out of life.

For more product information, please visit www.malungailifeoil.ph.
* Phytonutrients [are] present in the leaves of the moringa tree. These leaves are exceptionally rich in chlorophyll and many potent antioxidant flavonoids… A pressing question is, therefore, whether ingesting… “Moringa Life Oil” derived from these leaves can significantly reduce the likelihood of cancer development and even suppress cancers once they have fully developed. … [This] should be studied in non-operable cancer patients. At a minimum, it might help alleviate some of the side effects of chemotherapy. More importantly, it may help fuel and activate the body’s natural cancer preventative and suppression processes.“

Make Your CIHM Participation One for the Books

For those who are joining, or are still contemplating to join the Corregidor International Half Marathon 2010, the CIHM Organizing team came up with Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) that would answer your, well... questions about the race.

Q: Is the Php2500 (early-bird rate)/Php3000 (regular rate) too expensive for a race in the Philippines?
A: Not so. Relative to the ever increasing registration fees of races in Metro Manila, the participation fee in CIHM is actually very reasonable, and almost a steal. Sun Cruise’s regular rate per person for a daytrip to Corregidor that includes round-trip ferry, a group-guided tour of the island, and a lunch buffet is Php1,900.00. The CIHM package, excluding the guided tour, offers all participants round-trip ferry, a full lunch buffet on race day, a genuine dry-fit race shirt, race backpack, race bib equipped with an RFID timing chip, a classic Finishers’ Medallion, access to the Carbo-loading Bonfire Party, and a ticket to a mercury-rising after-race bash that is the CIHM Victory Party.

Q: Does the registration fee cover accommodations in the island?
A: No. Accommodations, however, range only from P1600 to P2400 per night per room. A standard room could accommodate three persons comfortably. It may be arranged through Sun Cruises at these numbers: 8346857/8346858 / 5275555 loc 4511 or 4512.

Q: Is there any other option for accommodation if I were to go overnight?
A: Yes. CIHM participants may opt to camp out with their own tent. They only have to make a one-time payment of Php200 per tent to Sun Cruises. The camp site is at the parade grounds adjacent to the South Dock and facing the beach. Those who will camp out need not worry about their lavatory needs. Though spartan in nature, there are more than ample clean washroom and restroom cubicles that are very proximate to the tent grounds.

Q: Still concerning those going overnight, where could they avail of their meals?
A: Sun Cruises operates Corregidor Inn where CIHM participants may dine out in a welcoming restaurant. Alternatively, there are several kiosks in the island such as that in McCarthur’s Inn where participants may check out other meal options.

Q: Will CIHM participants camping out be allowed to bring camping stoves?
A: Mini camping stove or similar devices that will produce a relatively minimal combustion may be allowed to be brought in by participants who will camp out.

Q: Are bikes allowed to be brought along?
A: Owing to space limitations in and weight restrictions of the ferries, CIHM participants are disallowed to bring along their bicycles.

Q: Will Corregidor be open to regular tourists on the day of the race?
A: No. The island will be exclusive to CIHM participants on Dec 18 and 19. This means that CIHM racers could totally enjoy a traffic-less and urban-nuisance-free race amidst a dramatic backdrop, and that is only in Corregidor.

Q: Where can foreign nationals, residing outside the Philippines, intending to join CIHM get information on Philippine visa requirements?
A: They may check out the tab “Philippine Visa Information for Foreign Participants” in the CIHM website www.corregidor2010.runningmate.ph or other veritable websites on the net.

Q: Can registered participants have their own pacers?
A: Yes but only if the pacer is also a registered CIHM participant. The race will strictly adhere to the “No Bib, No Race” policy.

Q: Will there be a sweep time for CIHM participants?
A: None. CIHM participants need not worry about being swept off the race course after a particular time. However, for a participant to finish the race, he/she needs to reach the half-way checkpoint on or before 1hr45min from gunstart. Participants who will be unable to do so, however, will be awarded with a 10K Achiever medal and will be brought to the Finish area onboard the Sun Cruises tranvias. All participants who will successfully finish the 21k distance will be awarded with the CIHM Finishers’ Medallion

Q: How many hydration stations will there be on the race course?
A: There will be 8 hydration stations, including one at the finish area, at 2km interval from each other.

Q: Will there be first aid stations along the race course?
A: Yes. First aid, actually, will be integrated with the hydration stations. Aside from this, a mobile paramedic team will also be in place.

Q: What is the unique selling point of Corregidor International Half-Marathon?
A: It is the idea that all CIHM participants will have the rare opportunity to run on sacred grounds and all their determined efforts will be cheered on by the glorious memory of heroism of our noble predecessors. Then there’s the bonus of an after-race Victory Party where participants could let their hair down to celebrate their achievement.

The KICK THE HABIT FUN RUN highlights the Buddy Run where a smoker and a runner are to be paired and simultaneously run with arms tied together in the 3k and 5k categories.

The objective is that the runner will continuously give the smoker the needed push for him to keep running during the whole duration of the course—both never letting go until the tandem crosses the finish line.

The 3k and 5k Family run route will also have a group category composed of at least four members each.

While the 3k and 5k routes will have an individual category, open for both male and female participants.
