Culture Unplugged Video - Chicken Ala Carte

I saw this video from one of the Yahoo groups. It is an entry for the 56th Berlin Film Festival, and it showcases a real story about hunger in the Philippine settings.

There is no real happiness such as the self-happiness you will feel when you have Charity for your neighbor.

Cancerous Foods and Products

SATAY LOVERS (BARBECUE)

If you all eat Satay, don't ever forget to eat the cucumber, because eating Satay together with carbon after barbequing can cause cancer.
But we have a cure for that... Cucumber should be eaten after we eat the Satay because Satay has carcinogen (a cancer causing element) but cucumber is anti-carcinogenic. So don't forget to eat the cucumber the next time you have Satay's.

PRAWNS (SUGPO) and VIT C

DO NOT eat shrimp / prawn if you have just taken VITAMIN C pills!!
This will cause you to DIE in ARSENIC (As) toxication within HOURS!!

PORK AWARENESS

Try this and see whether the pork you bought has worms. There goes with your "Bak Kut Teh" for those who love it. Most men love to eat this so watch out before it's too late. If you pours Coke (yes, the soda) on a slab of pork, wait a little while, you will SEE WORMS crawl out of it. A message from the Health Corporation of Singapore about the bad effects of pork consumption. Pig's bodies contain MANY TOXINS, WORM and LATENT DISEASES.

Although some of these infestations are harboured in other animals, modern veterinarians say that pigs are far MORE PREDISPOSED to these illnesses than other animals. This could be because PIGS like to SCAVENGE and will eat ANY kind of food, INCLUDING dead insects, worms, rotting carcasses, excreta including their own, garbage, and other pigs. INFLUENZA (flu) is one of the MOST famous illnesses which pigs share with humans. This illness is harboured in the LUNGS of pigs during the summer months and tends to affect pigs and human in the cooler months.

Sausage contains bits of pigs' lungs, so those who EAT pork sausage tend to SUFFER MORE during EPIDEMICS of INFLUENZA. Pig meat contains EXCESSIVE quantities of HISTAMINE and IMIDAZOLE compounds, which can lead to ITCHING and INFLAMMATION; GROWTH HORMONE which PROMOTES INFLAMMATION and growth; sulphur containing mesenchymal mucus which leads to SWELLING and deposits of MUCUS in tendons and cartilage, resulting in ATHRITIS, RHEUMATISM, etc.
Sulphur helps cause FIRM human tendons and ligaments to be replaced by the pig's soft mesenchymal tissues, and degeneration of human cartilage.

Eating pork can also lead to GALLSTONES and OBESITY, probably due to its HIGH CHOLESTEROL and SATURATED FAT content. The pig is the MAIN CARRIER of the TAENIE SOLIUM WORM, which is found in its flesh. These tapeworms are found in human intestines with greater frequency in nations where pigs are eaten. This type of tapeworm can pass through the intestines and affect many other organs, and is incurable once it reaches beyond a certain stage. One in six people in the US and Canada has RICHINOSIS from eating trichina worms, which are found in pork.

Many people have NO SYMPTOMS to warm them of this, and when they do, they resemble symptoms of many other illnesses. These worms are NOT noticed during meat inspections.

SHAMPOO

Cancer-causing substance in shampoos. Go home and check your shampoo. Change before it's too late... Check the ingredients listed on your shampoo bottle, and see they have a substance by the name of Sodium Laureth Sulfate, or simply SLS. This substance is found in most shampoos; manufacturers use it because it produces a lot of foam and it is cheap. BUT the fact is, SLS is used to scrub garage floors, and it is very strong!!! It is also proven that it can cause cancer in the long run, and this is no joke. Shampoos that contains SLS: Vo5, Palmolive, Paul Mitchell, L'Oreal, the new Hemp Shampoo from Body Shop etc. contain this substance.

The first ingredient listed (which means it is the single most prevalent ingredient) in Clairol's Herbal Essences is Sodium Laureth Sulfate. Therefore, I called one company, and I told them their product contains a substance that will cause people to have cancer. They said, Yeah we knew about it but there is nothing we can do about it because we need that substance to produce foam. By the way Colgate toothpaste also contains the same substance to produce the "bubbles". They said they are going to send me some information.

Research has shown that in the 1980s, the chance of getting cancer is 1 out of 8000 and now, in the 1990s, the chances of getting cancer is 1 out of 3, which is very serious. Therefore, I hope that you will take this seriously and pass this on to all the people you know, and hopefully, we can stop "giving" ourselves cancer-causing agents.

INSTANT NOODLES

Dear instant noodle lovers,

Make sure you break for at least 3 days after one session of instant noodles before you eat your next packet! Please read the info shared to me by a doctor. My family stopped eating instant noodles more than 5 years ago after hearing about the wax coating the noodles - the wax is not just in the Styrofoam containers but it coats the noodles. This is why the instant noodles do not stick to each other when cooking.

If one were to examine the ordinary Chinese yellow noodles in the market, one will notice that, in their uncooked state the noodles are oily. This layer of oil prevents the noodles from sticking together.

Wanton noodles in their uncooked state have been dusted with flour to prevent them sticking together. When the hawker cooks the noodles, notice he cooks them in hot water and then rinses them in cold water before cooking them in hot water again. This process is repeated several times before the noodles are ready to be served. The cooking and rinsing process prevents noodles from sticking together.

The hawker then "lowers the noodles in oil and sauce to prevent the noodles from sticking if they are to be served dry. Cooking instructions for spaghetti require oil or butter to be added in the water when boiling the spaghetti to prevent the pasta from sticking together. Otherwise, one gets a big clump of spaghetti!

There was an SBC (now TCS) actor some years ago, who at a busy time of his career had no time to cook, resorted to eating instant noodles everyday. He got cancer later on. His doctor told him about the wax in instant noodles. The doctor told him that our body will need up to 2 days to clear the wax. There was also an SIA steward who after moving out from his mother's house into his own house, did not cook but ate instant noodles almost every meal. He had cancer, and has since died from it.

Nowadays the instant noodles are referred as "cancer noodles".

Please, pass these informations.

Browsing Safely: Understanding Active Content

Many people browse the Internet without much thought to what is happening behind the scenes. Active contents are common elements that may pose hidden risks when viewed in a browser or email client.

What is active content?

To increase functionality or add design embellishments, web sites often rely on scripts that execute programs within the web browser. This active content can be used to create "splash pages" or options like drop-down menus. Unfortunately, these scripts are often a way for attackers to download or execute malicious code on a user's computer.

· JavaScript - JavaScript is just one of many web scripts (other examples are VBScript, ECMAScript, and JScript) and is probably the most recognized. Used on almost every web site now, JavaScript and other scripts are popular because users expect the functionality and "look" that it provides, and it's easy to incorporate (many common software programs for building web sites have the capability to add JavaScript features with little effort or knowledge required of the user). However, because of these reasons, attackers can manipulate it to their own purposes. A popular type of attack that relies on JavaScript involves redirecting users from a legitimate web site to a malicious one that may download viruses or collect personal information.

· Java and ActiveX Controls - Different from JavaScript and Java, ActiveX controls are actual programs that reside on your computer or can be downloaded over the network into your browser. If executed by attackers, untrustworthy ActiveX controls may be able to do anything on your computer that you can do (such as running spyware and collecting personal information, connecting to other computers, and potentially doing other damage). Java applets usually run in a more restricted environment, but if that environment isn't secure, then malicious Java applets may create opportunities for attack as well.

JavaScript and other forms of active content are not always dangerous, but they are common tools for attackers. You can prevent active content from running in most browsers, but realize that the added security may limit functionality and break features of some sites you visit. Before clicking on a link to a web site that you are not familiar with or do not trust, take the precaution of disabling active content.

These same risks may also apply to the email program you use. Many email clients use the same programs as web browsers to display HTML, so vulnerabilities that affect active content like JavaScript and ActiveX often apply to email. Viewing messages as plain text may resolve this problem.

Body Cramping Race

It has been more than two years since I last joined a fun run. More than two years when I almost got into the top ten finisher of the last running event that I joined. To be exact, two years and six months have passed since my first running experience. I have been inactive with running for these times due to time constraints with my ROTC class during Sundays, where most of the running events are scheduled.

Come February 2000, the famous Flower Festival or Panagbenga Festival in Baguio is attracting numerous visitors from all over the country. The Flower Festival Foundation Inc. has announced a running event as part of the City's Panagbenga celebration. My blood and my hormone spiked upon hearing it, I can join once again since ROTC class is now over.

On the registration office, I asked for a registration for the 5 kilometer distance, but they told me that there will be no 5 kilometer race, so I opted for the 10 kilometer. But then again, 10 kilometer is not also on the running distance list, only 21 kilometer is available. I know how I perform, and I know that I would not be able to run the 21 kilometer so I just head out going home with regret that I still cannot join a half-marathon after more than two years.

On the day of the event, I still went to the venue to check the runners who participated. I still brought with me my should-be attire if I was able to register. There are still a lot of them. Most of them are, as we all know, slim bodied, some have bigger leg muscles, some have longer legs, and etc. There are even more and much older people who joined who are already in their 45-55 of age range. It amazed me so much!

I was then sitting at the edge of Melvin Jones grandstand when a tall man with the same age as me asked me if the registration for the race is still available. I accompanied him to the registration area, and told him that I am also interested to join, but so afraid that my body might give-up due to the very long distance course of the event. The guy have the same concern as me but he still registered, and at the same time, he insisted and forced me to register and join too since it is just a once in a lifetime event that I might try such running distance. Since I also have my running clothes, I opted to register too while the guy was already warming up himself.

There's still 15 minutes left before the race began, I immediately stretched my whole body, kicking in the air, swinging my legs back and front, side-to-side until I felt that my blood has already warmed up. I had my eye on look out to the tall guy who forced me to join. I made him as my target competitor for this race. As the race begins, learning from my past experiences, I just ran in a low pace, jogging as if I was just on a park. I saw the tall guy ran past beyond me and lo, his steps are lengthful compared to my steps. I told to myself that later on I would be able to overtake him.

The route was from Burnham park to Loakan Rd., and past for a few more kilometers from the last gate of Camp John Hay, we turned left to a road that I don't know. The road and the place was no longer familiar to me, luckily there are still a lot of trees and the air is still so fresh. I haven't kept track anymore of the time and the distance because of the unfamiliarity of the place. But still, I can cope up with a lot of runners, overtook a group of PMA'ers who also joined the event. A few more minutes, and distance is still unknown, we turned a sharp right with an almost +60 degrees road incline. That road lead us to Wright Park where we still went straight up going to the Mansion House, and up to Mine's View. Now I've had the idea of the last remaining road routes, and I know I can already finish the race because it is already much nearer. Upon reaching Gibraltar road, my stomach is already full with water, but my mouth is still dry. I grabbed two cups of water, drank half of the other cup, while I poured the water of the other cup on my head. It was a refreshing feeling having a cold water pouring down to my body.

But then, that cold water which I poured was not a refreshment after all. I was already a few meters away from the Good Shepherd Convent when I suddenly felt little cramps on my quads. I stretched it hoping that it will be okay. It relaxed my muscles for a few more steps, but then my whole, left leg cramped this time. I'm now running with the full force of stride only on the right leg. It hurt so much when I force my left leg to step. I kept on fighting and telling myself that I can do it. I'm already commanding both of my legs literally, to give me more steps until I reach the finish line. Now I'm already near the rotunda of the Wright Park when I saw an ambulance parking beside the public elementary school (I forgot the name). I walked easily so the people on the ambulance would not notice that I'm already having a hard time running. But it can't be helped, I'm still dragging my left leg because it would hurt whenever I force it to step normally as it should. Then one of the medic asked me if I need a help. I immediately tell them yes upon seeing the ambulance's chairs (whew!).

While I was sitting on the ambulance, the cramps have already subsided, but the medic no longer allowed me to rejoin the runners since I have already sat and rested. Until the last runner came over our location, the ambulance already moved slowly following the last runner -- an old man in his late 50's or early 60's.

On the finish line, I wasn't able to get my Finisher's T-shirt because of what happened. My only souvenir was the Certificate of Appreciation sponsored and printed by Informatics Computer Institute Baguio. Then I saw the tall guy, he was so happy that he finished the course, and have his Baguio Flower Festival 21K T-shirt for his souvenir.

Men's Health Philippines Miracle Run 2009

The 2009 Men's Health 10,000 kilometer Miracle Run was organized for the benefit of "Tahanang Walang Hagdanan". Much like the same as the 2008 Miracle Run which benefited the "GMA Kapuso Foundation" which was held last Aug. 17, 2008 at The Bonifacio Global City. More information here.

This year's event was my second Miracle Run, and my third running participation for Men's Health Philippines. This time, as compared to my first Miracle Run, I was no longer that much excited, but I am still enthusiastic 'coz my feet, mind and body is more prepared. Though I still had insomnia for the past few weeks before the event, I managed to redeem my sleepless nights some few days back.

I was happy for my run's result. Though I targeted that I would finish within 50 minutes, I'm still contented with the outcome. My preparation though with this run was all indoors. I just raced my pace on the treadmill at our office's gym. The training is really different than when you're running on the streets. Your feet will just step as the treadmill flows, but when you're on the streets, your whole body, and the will of your mind will have to contribute for you to be able to run. And besides, it makes me bored running for more than 20 minutes on a treadmill. It just makes my mind blank staring only at the window, seeing my own reflection and the same objects outside the window. So for those who are really serious in running, I highly recommend training and running outdoors than just using a treadmill.
